Colts Match Reports 2008

14th May 2008

North Mymms Under-13’s v Old Owens.

Old Owens 72/8 from 20 Overs.

North Mymms 72/4  from 20 Overs.

North Mymms were a few players short for this match but Old Owens had brought 14 players with them so Mymms had a loan of three players in order to even up the teams.

NMCC won the toss and Mat Rathbone the captain decided to field.  Mymms opened the bowling with Tom Rogers and Mat Rathbone.  Once Mat had found his rhythm he bowled 3 very tight overs going for just 6 runs.  Unlucky not to pick up a wicket.  Tom also bowled his first 3 overs very well, with a bit more success picking up 3 wickets for 5 runs.  Tom bowled an excellent line and got the wickets he deserved.  Jamie Blackburn was the first change and again bowled really well, bowling a very controlled tight line, also swinging the ball as well.  His figures of 4 wickets for 7 runs off of his 4 overs was the bowling performance of the match.  The others to bowl for Mymms were Calum Baylis, going for just 4 runs from 2 overs, Jason Baldwin whose leg spin was very threatening at times but to many loose balls meant he was costly from his 3 overs.  Over all the bowling was very impressive, with some very tight lines and very few extras.  The tight bowling meant that Old Owens were restricted to 72 from their 20 overs.

With a required run rate of  3.6 an over required Mymms were looking to get a solid start not losing to many early wickets and to keep the runs ticking over.  Mymms opened with Calum Baylis and Luc Cook.  Some very good calling and running between the wickets got Mymms off to a good start with 12 runs coming off the first 4 overs.  Baylis unfortunately lost his wicket in the last ball of the third trying to punish a bad ball but unfortunately got a top edge.  Cook batted very well holding up one end for 11 overs.  He picked up 5 runs but did a good job calling and supporting the other batsmen who lost their wickets around him.  Luke Short an Old Owens sub scored 25 very good runs and retired on 25 meaning Alexander Long joined Luke in the middle.  Only 10 Alex looks a very promising player but was bowled by a good delivery for 0.  The skipper then came to the crease and played a very controlled knock to see the match to the end. Cook was bowled by a big spinning delivery trying to increase the run rate, which meant Jason Baldwin joined Rathbone at the crease, Baldwin didn’t hang around however and was replaced by Dan for 1 run.  Dan another Owens sub saw the match to the end.  With 12 runs required off of 12 balls the game was very well poised, Rathbone, choose his runs well, as the batsmen in form he held on to the strike and as it looked like Owens were heading for a win Rathbone hit a 4 from the over leaving 6 to win from the last over.  Rathbone then managed to hit a 4 four them 3rd ball leaving 2 off the last 2 balls.  A safe single from the last ball of the game meant the match ended as a tie.  A fair reflection, after some very good bowling from Mymms.  More positive batting can be worked on but overall a very positive performance.

North Mymms A V North Mymms B  12th May 2008

Our due opponents, Hatfield Hyde, pulled out of the match at 4,30pm that afternoon.  Seeing as we had 11 players arranged for the game, I had a ring around a few Mymms members and arranged an inter club game for match practice.  Many thanks to Chris Gregory, Martin Dee, Chris Edrupt, Wayne Howell, Monty, Andrew Craig, Stuart Craig, Carl Veneballs and Andy Goodliffe for stepping in at short notice and helping complete a successful match.

The highlights of the match were Adam Davies bowling, he bowled very quick and a very good line, swinging the ball around and picking up 2 wickets for 11 runs off his 3 overs.  Those wickets were of prized batsmen Andrew Craig and Ben Howell.  Jack Lockyear also batted well off the bowling of Davis and the accurate lines of Chris Edrupt.  Calum Baylis also bowled very well, picking up the wicket of Will Clarke, and Mat Rathbone also looked very relaxed and it meant he bowled 4 very good overs, only going for 3 runs in total and also picking up the last wicket of Carl Veneballs.

In the 2nd innings, Tom Wiggins batted very well and was retired after scoring 17, Rory Craig also batted very well and retired on 19.  Adam Davies had a very good game also with the bat and hit 19 before also retiring.   Jack Caulfield unfortunately had to face the ferocious bat of Monty who launched him to all parts of the ground.  Jamie Blackburn also bowled, no success on the wicket front but did bowl a very tight line, only going for 5 runs off his 2 overs.  Tom Rogers, Will Clarke and Ben Howell also had an over as did Jack Lockyear.

7th May 2008

North Mymms Under-15’s V’s Old Owens.

Old Owens 160/2 from 20 Overs.

North Mymms 92/6  from 20 Overs.

NMCC lost the toss and were asked to field on a very warm, sunny evening.  Mymms unfortunately got off to a poor start and in general the bowing was to short and enabled the Owens batsmen to step back and pick their spot.  The run rate was quickly at a high rate.  Owens had some strong batsmen, and the top three all scored over 30 with the opener retiring on 50.  Jason Baldwin was the first bowler to get a breakthrough bowling the other opener and at points bowled some very testing deliveries.  The other wicket fell to Jack Caulfield, who after a bad first over bounced back and showed good character only going for 8 runs in his next two overs.  Adam Davis also had very respectable figures after 3 overs only going for 11 runs, unfortunately his last over went for 12.  Jamie Blackburn, Callum Baylis and Mat Rathbone also bowled the remaining overs.

With a required run rate of 8 an over required Mymms were always up against it.  Although a very solid start from Ben Howell and Jack Lockyear gave the Owens skipper something to think about.  After 10 overs Mymms were on 55 without loss, similar score line to that of Old Owens.  Shortly after, Lockyear lost his wicket and the momentum slightly dipped.  Rory Craig put up some resistance, whilst Howell was still picking of the bad balls on his way to his top score of 35.  Batting very well, making some good decisions about attacking anything short.  Ben lost his wicket to a full toss which he was trying to hit out the ground, unfortunate, but a very good knock.  Tom Rogers then came to the crease followed soon by Tom Wiggins.  Running between the wickets was a lot better than it has been and helped in getting to the usually competitive total of 92.  Once Craig was out to a suspiciously high full toss, Adam Davis came to the crease and batted very well to remain unbeaten at the end of the match with Jack Caulfield who unfortunately didn’t face a ball.  He replaced Callum Baylis after a very determined stand.

Overall the batting was a lot more impressive, with running and calling a lot more decisive, unfortunately the bowling let us down this week, when we can put both sides of the game together I am sure we will pick up our first win.

Ben Bagshaw.

North Mymms Under-15’s v Old Albanians.

North Mymms 77/8 from 20 Overs.

Old Albanians 78/2 from 8 Overs.

NMCC faced a very strong Old Albanians side for the first game of the new season, however showed very promising signs for a young side.  NMCC batted first and lost quick wickets in that of Rory Craig and Tom Rogers.  Jack Lockyear and young Callum Baylis controlled the loss of wickets and had a good partnership of 20.  Both Lockyear and Baylis fell in quick succession both for 11.  Adam Davies came to the crease with Will Clarke who quickly departed followed by Mat Rathbone.  Davies was top scorer on 15 and Jason Baldwin was the only other wicket to fall with Tom Wiggins and Jamie Blackburn finishing not out.

Adam Davies opened the bowling with Jack Caulfield.  Caulfield’s first over was very eventful picking up two early wickets, the first was bowled after bowling a good line, the 2nd was a very good catch from a well struck pull shot from Callum Baylis.  No more wickets were to fall as OA’s reached the target in the 8th over.  However there were some very good fielding displays from wicket keeper/captain Rory Craig and throughout.  Jason Baldwin bowled good leg spin with little success and all the other bowlers bowled good lines and lengths only giving 5 extras away in comparison to the opponents 26.  Overall it was a tough game with great potential and room for improvement.
