The
team was made up of 2 3rd XI players and 9 4th XI
players. We took on a Totteridge side with 2 div 2 players and 9 div 6,
clearly it was appropriate that they batted first and a score of 259 for 7
reflected the difference in class. Dispite the loss of a couple of early
wickets, the ball started going to all parts of the ground. When the
declaration came after 45 overs we knew we had no chance of getting the
required runs. Bowling wise Jeff Spencer always asked questions of the
batters, Adam Davies made an impressive debut despite not picking up any
wickets, Martin Dee picked up 3 wickets on hs debut and the other wickets
were shared about.
Having lost both openers without a run on the board, an early finish looked
the most likely result, but Mick Stiffin (27) and Jeff Spencer (52) were
supported by Darren Medforth 40 NO and we finished on 170 for 9 and a draw
was achieved but probably not deserved. All in all a good work out with
Darren Medforth getting his highest score for Mymms and Martin Dee getting
his first wickets for the club, a good day for some.
My man of the match was Jeff Spencer, always a threat with the ball and a
hard hitting 50 when the game looked all over.

Langleybury
won the toss in pretty miserable conditions and chose to have a
bat. The Mymms bowlers put in what can only be described as a
brilliant
performance to dismiss Langlebury for 42. The wickets were shared out
between Mark Terry (4 - Jug avoidance??), Jack Caulfield (3), Andrew
Goodliffe (2) and Ben Howell (1). They were backed up by some good
work in
the field including Stumpys nonchalant one handed slip catch. This was
mostly done with 10 players aswell, with Steve T delayed until late in the
proceedings.
Chasing 43 in 75 overs, Mymms got these comfortably inside 12 overs for the
loss of two wickets, and were able to put their feet up and watch the
football scores come in! Good work guys, same again next week please!

Our
first 4th team league game saw us take on a strong Tewin II side with
only one colt in the team, against our talented 6. The benefit of covers at
our new home ground meant that play began at 2.40 on a pretty dry wicket.
The game being reduced to 72 overs split 38 and 34, we won the toss and
decided to bat and John Tunnell and Mark Terry saw us off to a good start
with 35 for the first wicket with JT being given out unluckily LBW of an
inside edge. Stuart Craig joined Mark and they took the score to 65 before
Mark was bowled for a fine 30, wickets then feel at regular intervals as we
struggled towards 100, Stuart got 22, Damian Southall 15 and the Skipper
chipped in with 11, we were finally all out for 109 off the last ball of the
37th over having been at one stage 87 for 3. First lesson boys, use up all
the overs even if we don't pick up many runs, as it turned out that lost
over proved vital.
The opening attack did not pick up any wickets despite not conceding many
runs and the skipper introduced leg spin from 13 year old Jason Baldwin
making his senior debut, Jason immediately trapped the opener LBW and we
were on our way, first point of 2007, Alex Kenyon, also making his 4th team
debut came on at the other end and and dismissed the other opener. With both
Jason and Alex picking up another wicket each, we had 4 wickets and the
adults of Tewin were feeling the pressure from the colts of Mymms. A short
break for rain meant the batting side were now reduced to 32 overs, plus the
one they gained from bowling us out, thus 33 overs was the revised total.
With overs running out but with wickets in hand, the skipper made a final
throw of the dice and made 2 more bowling changes, the result was instant,
Mark Terry took two quick wickets, had another put down and when our skipper
got out theirs, they were 7 down and needing 9 to win from 12 balls, all
results were possible, picking up 6 runs in the 32nd over, which should have
been their last, they needed 3 runs off the last and got them with 2 ball to
spare despite chipping the ball in the air just out of reach of our
fielders. I said that lost over would be vital.
Great debuts for Jason Baldwin, Louie Walpole who looks a fine prospect at
12 years of age with both gloves and bat, Alex Kenyon, Adam Davies, Ross
Wiltshire playing only his second game and another debutant Martin Dee. A
special word for Martin who was not able to get on to bowl, the skipper
explained the situation and Martin showed great maturity for a young man and
said there would be other games. An attitude not always shown by some of the
more senior players it has to be said. Well done Martin, and well done the
whole team, there was no doubt we had them worried and with a bit of luck
could have pulled off an unlikely victory. Away to another strong team next
week, Ware II, also with no colts and who got off to a winning start
themselves yesterday. The 7 points we got ensure we are not bottom with 3
teams below us.
Contenders for MOM were Alex with 2 wickets, a catch and also not out,
Stuart with a fine fielding display, a catch off the skipper's bowling
(always a good move) and 22 runs and Jason Baldwin with 2 wickets and a fine
spell of bowling, however Jason when the skipper says use up the overs with
only 8 balls left of the innings, smashing one up in the air 2nd ball is not
what I had in mind, still great promise with the leg spin. My choice,
however, goes to Mark Terry with 30 runs and two wickets for 6 runs, he also
bought lots of drinks in the bar afterwards. Lets all make sure we give him
a run for his money next week at Ware. Once again, well done boys, I'm proud
of you all.

Ware were the one side
that gave us a good beating last year, bowling us out for 92 and winning by
8 wickets, this gave us 2 points and our lowest return from any game last
season. Understandably we were keen to do better this year and the pre match
team talk was all about being focussed and making sure we got everything
from the game we could. With 6 changes from last weeks team, it was all about
getting people into league cricket. Colin Barson hadn't played any cricket
for 10 years, Steve Rowsell was making his league debut and we were grateful
to Andrew Craig and Alan Richardson for coming in at the last moment
following the usual drop outs on friday night and Sat morning.
Having lost the toss we were invited to bat and the game took a similar
course to last year as we were dismissed for 110, the skipper again being
not out on 24, Mark Terry, Alan Richardson and Steve Rowsell all made double
figures but the batting of Alex Kenyon and Adam Davies was impressive
putting on useful partnerships with the skipper. Mark Elbourne loked
comfortable batting at 4 and Colin Barson showed you don't lose class even
after 10 years without a game. Jason Baldwin lasted 3 crucial deliveries
this week ensuring that we batted out all but 2 balls of our 47 overs.
In reply, Ware never got going and the opening attack of the Skipper and
Alex Kenyon saw them 3 down but with no sign of the destruction that was to
come from the spin twins. It was a brave move from the skipper to bring on
both slow bowlers at the same time but the result was immediate, adults
batting against 12 and 14 year olds is never a fair match and this proved to
be the case as Ben picked up 5 for 22 and Jason bagged 2 for 20 as Ware were
destroyed for a paltry 76, 12 of which we gave them in extras.
A fabulous effort from the whole team and a well deserved 30 points which
puts us in the top third, yet another second team next week as we travel to
Monken Hadley.
The Skipper made a real bid to grab MOM this week with top score of 24 Not
out, 2 for 10 off 8 and a catch, but as everyone agreed, the thing that won
us the game was the taking of the wickets and therefore this weeks MOM is
Ben Howell. Well done Ben.

With overcast skies we
started our innings, having been inserted, again. We were keen to avenge for
last season's defeat and openers Tunnell and Terry soon set about putting
the bowling to the sword. JT looked in fine form and was leaving Mark behind
in his wake before he edged one behind and was out for 24 and we were 38 for
1. Colin Barson got one that kept low and was bowled for 4, one more than
last week Colin, and we were now 54 for 2 with Mark starting to pick up the
pace. Enter a bronzed Stuart Bulger fresh from the Algarve and the next
wicket, which was his, fell in the 37th over with the score on 199 and a
partnersip with Mark of 145, Stuart's contribution being 80 off 74 balls
with 11 fours and 1 six.
Tiredness was the downfall of Mark when bowled for 79 and the score on 212.
Ian Bright, Steve Rowsell and 16 not out from Colin Simmons, meant we were
able to declare at 225 for 5 leaving them the same 45 overs to get the runs
at 5 per over.
In truth Monken Hadley were never going to get the runs and with the spin
twins opening the bowling they needed to show a desire to attack if they
were going to get any points out of the game. Their skipper opened the
batting and was not out when we finally called it a day after 40 overs,he
was unbeaten on 42. Alex Kenyon, despite bowling too short, picked up a
wicket as did the skipper, but Stuart Bulger picked up the MOM this week
with his 2 for 24 off 15 overs to go with his 80.
My thanks to everyone for fielding in dreadfull conditions and probably for
too long, truth be known, still the 14 points we got from the game sees us
leap up the table to 4th, one above Monken Hadley. Well done

In the conditions, it was a brave decision by Mymms to bat first,
in truth Owens didn't bowl many straight deliveries to take full advantage
of the variable bounce. Never-the-less openers Tunnell and Terry batted with
care and application and without any stupid or expansive shots, they went
past 100 for the 3rd time together and it was 105 before Mark Terry was
bowled playing his first real aggressive shot and we were in the 27th over.
Sadly the Skipper had to give Nick Dunleavy out LBW playing across the line
to a straight one that kept a bit low, we were now 126-2 in 32 overs. Stuart
Craig then joined John Tunnell and together they took the score to 206
before JT was finally caught for an excellent 85 and one of his best
innings with shots all round the ground. John batted one over short of our
allotted 47, but there was still time for Damian Southall to hit 13 not out
to join Stuart Craig, the other undefeated bat who scored a fine 38. Our
total at the close was 223 for 3 and maximum 10 batting points. Our innings
was aided by 44 extras conceded by Owens, most of them byes, which is
confirmation of the variable bounce.
It was not likely that Owens would get the runs in their 43 overs, but to
their credit they set about the task with relish scoring at well over the
required rate but losing wickets on a regular basis. We, in an act of
reciprocal generosity, kept their run rate up by bowling 24 wides, which in
addition to the runs, is another 4 overs. Bowling them out proved a little
beyond us although had we taken our catches it could have been a different
story. They ended up with 141 for 6 giving us 16 points from the game and
them 4. The bowling figures were Lawless 2-17, Gregory 2-11, Adam Davies who
bowled well and without luck, 1-13 and Mark Terry 1-10. The spin twins of
Baldwin and Howell both had catches dropped and on another day could have
had 3 wickets each.
Another good effort from all the team and we drop slightly to 6th in the
league but the two teams above both have only 1 point more than us.
A must win game next week against bottom of the table Met Police, we need
the 30 points if we are to stay in the promotion race. MOM this week must go
to John Tunnel for his fine 85.

lost the toss and Met Police, determined to record their first win of the
season, decided to bat. The decision looked to be a bad one when they
crashed to 10-3, the skipper having bagged all three. With 14 overs gone,
openers Bulger and Lawless had restricted Met Police to 14 for 3. The
skipper, for all the right reasons made a double change and this provided
some respite to the Police batters, who then took the score to 79 before the
next wicket fell, Jason Baldwin turning one a long way to bowl the left
hander. The introduction of Mark Terry brought 2 more wickets and we were
again back in the game at 92 for 6. Yet another bowling change, the 7th,
brought Martin Dee into the attack and although runs flowed freely from both
ends, he ended up with 3 wickets but at a cost of 6 an over of his 5 overs,
always difficult to bowl at the death. The skipper picked up his 4th wicket
and Met Police were all out for 161 in 45 overs.
My philosophy of giving everyone a game could be questioned, and was, but I
still believe if the youngsters are to improve they need to be given a
chance. The biggest learning point from yesterday was our inability to bowl
straight. Met Police scored only 115 runs from the bat, a total we passed
with some ease, the remaining 46 runs came from us, 28 of which were wides
and no balls which is directly attributed to the bowler. The 24 overs bowled
by the skipper, Stuart Bulger and Mark Terry resulted in only one wide, the
remaining 27 wides and no balls coming from the other bowlers in only 21
overs. Not good enough. Enough said.
Having got to 18 without any scares, we then lost both openers on the same
score. Mark Elbourne and Stuart Bulger then put on 46 taking us to 64 when
we again lost 2 wickets on the same score, poor Jack Eagling starting his
Mymms batting career with the worst of starts. While Stuart was still at the
crease the win was more than on. Sadly he became the victim of the 4th LBW
decision of the day. Having scored a fine 66, we needed less than 50 to win
but were now 5 wickets down. Sadly they were not as generous as we were in
the extras department and although we comfortably passed the runs of the bat
total, we fell 27 runs short with still 7 overs left. Still, onwards and
upwards, top of the table Great Gaddesdon next week and I hope to be able to
pick from strength if we can get out a 5th's. The 10 bowling points we got
from the game keeps our promotion hopes very much alive and we are only 11
points behind the team in 3rd place. The next two weeks will define our
season. MOM this week goes to Stuart Bulger for his fine 66, 2 catches, and
7 runs from 7 overs. Well done everyone and here's a return to winning ways
next week

What was always going to be a difficult game,
was made more so by poor availability and last minute drop outs, the
consequence of this was we arrived at Great Gaddesden with only 9 men and
Steve Rowsell coming along later when finished work. Can I thank everyone
who played because by playing we saved the 10 point penalty we would have
incurred had we cancelled which would have been very easy to do when we only
had 7 at the start of the week.
Having won the toss, we maintained our philosophy and batted first, great
credit to openers Mark Terry and John Tunnell for having the technique to
keep out one of the best bowling attacks in the division, they were both
great and both very conscious of our brittle batting line up. In fact we
reached 49 before losing our first wicket and when JT was later out for a
fine 45, a batting collapse had been averted. JT is in fine form this season
and a great asset and foil to Mark at the top of the innings. Off our
reduced overs of 45 we only scored 115 but equally had only lost 4 wickets
with contributions from Steve Rowsell, Paul Terry and a welcome return to
Jason Silvey who hasn't picked up a bat for 3 years, with an unbeaten 13 it
looked like he hadn't been away.
With 41 overs, soon reduced to 40, GG set about getting the runs by trying
to smash every ball out of the ground, they certainly enjoyed huge amounts
of luck but we held onto some fine catches to ensure they were losing
wickets on a regular basis. I must confess, for one of the very few times in
my term as captain, I abandoned my philosophy of giving everyone a game, and
opened the bowling with Mark Terry, and made changes at the other end, Mark
repaid my gesture by picking up 5 for 25. When the final, critical downpour
came, we only wanted another 5 wickets for victory and GG were still 23 runs
short with only 18 overs left, we were gutted, but reluctantly accepted the
10 points for an abandoned game with insufficient overs being bowled in the
second innings to constitute a match. So GG maintain their unbeaten record
and we remain well placed for a promotion push.
Lots of positives from the game, the welcome return of Jason Silvey, the
debut of Ben Clark with a good catch, the fact that Martin Dees mum, Mandy,
can now score, thereby improving Martins selection chances, the fact that
Martins Nan brings along a mobile tuck shop for the personal use of Martin
and the Skipper, well done Jean and finally, the knowledge that we can
compete against the best teams and not let ourselves down.
Numpty of the week goes to Jason Baldwin who 5 mins before tea announces he
has left all his whites at home. Well done mum Suzy who then drove to the
ground and ensured we only had to put up with him fielding in black for 3
overs.
MOM this week goes to Mark Terry for diligent batting and 5 wickets,
although JT came close. MOM's now stand at MT 2, Bulge 2, JT 1, Ben Howell
1. Unbeaten table topping Reed next week take on the fighting fours, lets
hope for better availability and more of the same spirit. Well done
everyone, I'm proud to be your Skipper. Ian

Once again we batted first, although
this time by request, and once more, openers Terry and Tunnell got us off to
a steady start reaching 37 before Mark was caught at short leg by the 2nd
team import, Stuart Bulger was unlucky to go the same way first ball, this
time a much better and harder catch. My eternal thanks to Stuart Johnstone
for stepping into the side at the last minute and driving down from
Cambridge to help us out following a last minute drop out, he must have
wondered why he had bothered when he popped up a simple catch to point and
set off towards the pavilion, much to everyone's surprise, the easy catch
was dropped and 3 balls later Stuart was on 12.
The adage of making them pay was true in this case as Stuart ended up with
an unbeaten 64 and the skipper also unbeaten on 11 made sure we got 4
batting points and we closed on 157 for 7. The second team player coming on
late into our innings and picking up 3 wickets.
Our only significant rain break came shortly into their innings and the
reduced allocation of 39 overs should have proved a challenge to Reed.
Openers Bulger and Lawless got Reed 3 down and wanting 107 from the last 17
overs.
It was at this point the game took a significant turn in fortunes, the
following 7 overs were bowled by the youngsters and without taking a wicket
they yielded 66 runs, this took the game away from us and the second team
player finished on 47 not out, Reed won comfortably with 7 overs to spare
and by 7 wickets Having bowled 12 overs for 35 runs, I'm truly
disappointed that the crucial 7 overs cost 66, the blame is all mine and I
take full responsibility, I need to have a little re-think. Some of our
basic fielding was shocking and we should have pushed Reed much harder than
we did. MOM must go to Stuart Johnstone for his fine 64. We must improve
when we take on Knebworth Park VI next week at home. I know there was huge
disappointment yesterday reflected in the fact that when I came out of the
showers, everyone had left!!! Nothing we can do now, lets be positive and
look forward to next weeks game.

The benefit of having Met Police as our home
ground means we have covered wickets and run ups. With both sides keen to
play, surface water was pushed of the square and the game began at 2.15
having been reduced to 40 and 36 overs. We were invited to bat and lost
wickets at regular intervals 12, 13, 24, 35 & 46.Throughout it all John
Tunnell remained defiant at the wicket picking up runs where he could but
not helped by the regular fall of wickets at the other end, no one had yet
made double figures. James Tiley, playing his first game of the season, came
in at 7 and put bat to ball and put on 25 with JT before being bowled for 14
from 22 balls. We then moved to 80 for 7 before the Skipper joined JT and
together put on an unbeaten 47 for the 8th wicket which allowed us to end
our innings at 127 for 8 with JT still unbeaten on 44. With only 36 overs to
get the runs Knebworth Park would need to bat well to force a win. Opening
bowlers Ian (I've got to leave early) McCarthy and Mark Terry kept KP behind
the rate required and Mark bagged 2 -28 and Ian 1-20 before the rain became
too intense and common sense prevailed when the two captains agreed to call
it off with KP on 59 for 4 from 21 overs leaving the game finely balanced
with another 69 needed from 15 overs with 6 wickets in hand. 10 points each
and no ground lost or gained as every game in the division was called off.

Having won the toss (well skippered) we chose
to have a bat and set
off on the 5 minute walk from the pavilion to the pitch! Having got
their
and realised the bails were still in his car "the skipper" put in
a little
cross country jog to get them (well run) and the game eventually got under
way.
Russ Bennett opened the batting, sporting trousers rolled up to the knee,
added a few then got out, caught behind, given by Macca (well triggered!).
Imran then came to the crease which worked out quite well. Imran
started
slowly, almost being overshadowed by Steve Tilley scoring a quickfire 35
off 135 balls (well blocked!). The 100 came up in 35 overs, quickly
followed by Steve's demise.
Shoaib came to the crease and him and Imran got a bit of a wriggle on.
Imran batted well to 50 on debut and then treated himself to 103* with
some great stroke play. Shoaib adding 42* as we declared on 222-2 off
50.
We then hiked back to the pavilion, ready for our £115 tea. With
mouths
watering at what delights we would be tucking into for that sum of money we
made it back much quicker than we got out to the pitch earlier. Tea
was asurprise.... donuts and sandwiches are clearly
expensive these days (well
robbed!)
We then had a bowl and got them out for 130 (well bowled, well caught!).
Jeff 1st ball - wide, nearly missed the actual strip. Macca then fell
to
the floor, practically hyper-ventilating! Roll-over to next week as
nobody
picked a wide.
Well played boys, 4th in the league now!

A
historic day for the club with 3 wins and a draw for the league teams and
the first ever appearance of a 5th Team in Mymms colours,
the future certainly looks good for the club in terms of numbers.
The 4ths took on a strong Watton-At-Stone II (WAS) yesterday, sitting 4
places above us in the table. At the toss their skipper announced that he
had had 4 first team players dropped to his team and was therefore quite
strong, despite that we stuck to our principles and batted first, the going
was really tough against a good opening attack, one of the first teamers,
playing div 5 the week before, tested the patience and resilience of our
regular openers Terry and Tunnell, or double T as I call them.
The opening stand of 41 took 18 overs before Mark tried to hit out at one
that kept a little low and lost his middle stump. By the time we reached 28
overs we had still only reached 70 and JT, Stuart Johnstone and Andrew
Goodliffe had all joined Mark back in the Pavilion. Damian Southall put bat
to ball and scored the top score of 23 before picking the wrong one to hit.
At 93 for 8 with only 3 overs left it was doubtful if we would make 100 but
we hadn't bargained on Ben Howell and Ross Wiltshire, who together put on 16
in the last 3 overs to remain unbeaten on 12 and 5 respectively. Little did
we know at the time how vital those precious runs would prove to be.
So with 109-8 we set about picking up as many points as we could get, being
8-0 down at this stage. Ross Wiltshire following on his good work with the
bat bowled the young opener in his first over and we were on our way, they
were always well ahead of any run rate but losing wickets at steady
intervals. At 4 down, the skipper picking up 2 and getting a run out, the
first team bowler arrived to join his other first team colleague and we knew
this was the vital partnership of the innings. Mark Terry had played against
this guy before in Div 5 and advised us he was a hitter with a good eye, the
skipper replied that he wouldn't be hitting him around the ground and 3
balls later regretted the comment as he was dispatched for 6 over cow.
With the game starting to get away from us as they took the score to 75 for
4, Jason Baldwin managed to induce a thin edge from the first teamer and we
had an end open, Ben Howell bowled well and also picked up a wicket, Mark
Terry was introduced and he bagged one. This was now do or die as they
needed only 12 to win with 3 wickets in hand, loads of overs to go and the
skipper at the wicket on 40.
Mark Terry got their skipper to hit one in the air and we all sighed with
dismay as the ball went sailing over the head of Ben Howell, but frustration
turned to joy as young Ben leaped upwards and backwards and took a fabulous
catch performing several somersaults as he landed Ben was mobbed by the team
and even Mark managed a grunt of appreciation as their skipper trudged off
knowing he had given his wicket away.
The skipper then reintroduced himself back into the attack and with Ben
Howell taking another catch off his bowling, they were 9 down and still
needing 5 to win with the last man at the crease. Maiden after maiden was
bowled by Mark and the skipper and then a wide brought them to within a 4 of
victory. With still 3 overs left, the skipper finally got reward for a
consistent line and the number 11 tried a pull to mid wicket which he top
edged high into the waiting gloves of keeper Goodliffe. It was all over and
we had won by 3 runs. A fabulous game of cricket played in good spirit
by both teams.

After a number of Mymms boys
arrived at the ground with fragile heads, having celebrated a Saturday win.
I made a "school boy error" of tossing with a 20 pence piece, the
wind got hold of it? On an absolute Mymms road, Eastcote elected to
Bat ("surprise, surprise). Unfortunately, this meant I couldn't
put the lightweight, good for nothing children down for a pre-innings Nap
(not mentioning any names, Macca, Clax, Matt "do us a step over the
boundary" Willams and Mouse).
"Modo" (Kwesi Roy) and
Coley opened the bowling and Eastcote started to tuck in. No break
through and Eastcote looked good. Only one drop in the slips off
Coley, chin up Mazzer, its not like he went onto getting a ton or
anything??? Good spell from Coley though. The fielding got
progressively better as the day went on, but a few shocking fielding
performances from the people who decided to have a nap anyway.Good batting
from their openers apart from in the 43 over……..where their opener was
more interested in his ton and Steve Long bowled the only maiden of the
innings. This proved to be one of the deciding factors in the end.
In context of the Match, Coley,
Macca and Longy put in decent efforts. We suffered slightly, due to
not having a spinner in the side, wasn't really Modo's or Mazzers
deck.Eastcote got 286-3 off their 45 over's.
Coley and Mather opened and got
us off to a good start, but the first big partnership between Modo (78) and
Howey (79) set things up. This was followed up with a rapid 50 (of 35
balls) from Clax (its amazing how awake he is when he bats, but chasing a
ball is a different story). By the last two over's, the boys had got
it down to a run a ball. Under proper Chess Valley pressure, it was left
down to a couple of pretty decent cover drives, from Macca (11 of 5balls),
to win the game with 5 balls to spare. If only Macca was around at the
end of the innings the week before.
Good debut from Longy with a
decent second spell in the circumstances and a cheeky/handy little knock at
No.5.
Pretty decent chase from the
Chess Valley boys, Net run rate should be off for a while. Well batted
boys, who ever said you need to bowl and field well to win a game, absoult
cricket myth.
* special
mention this week to PC Andrew Cole, Coley, Mr Cricket (with Mrs Cricket and
Mrs Crickets mate), whose tea was the best down Mymms this year. He
put in a decent performance on the field as well. The boy
cleaned up the pavilion and did the Bar and Lock-up to a high standard.
Cheers mate, good example to the rest of us. All this was done
with zero moaning and nothing was a chore to Mr Cole, a round of applause to
the that man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers,Blacky

A
great team performance produced our last ball victory
on Saturday. Mymms chose to bat on an easy paced wicket that offered little
to spin or seam all day.
After
useful contributions from Mark Saxby, Kyle Claxton, Kwesi Roy and a cultured
70 from Simon Clements, we owed much to runs from Rhys Carter and Dan Nicol
batting at 7 and 9. The final total of 223 was passable though maybe 250
should have been achievable.
Hertford tried to force the pace but were set back by a superb opening spell
from Donny Miller, who took three early wickets and could easily have taken
a couple more. Cliff Cavener kept Hertford in the hunt, while Mymms
concentrated on attacking at the other end, trying to force the victory. All
the bowlers made vital contributions: Kwesi
Roy clean bowled one just before tea, Paul Coverdale had the opposition
captain caught behind, Mark Saxby had two caught at bat pad in two balls.
Hertford staged a comeback, with young Ollie Ray supporting Cavener and
Mymms keeping the game open to encourage Hertford to keep trying for the
win.
Rhys
Carter chipped in with four inexpensive overs, and, as the pressure mounted,
Andy Cole came on bowl Ray and Donny came back to bowl the number 10,
leaving Hertford nine down, needing 12 off the last over. Golden arm Rhys
Wynne, specialist last over wicket taker, stepped up to take the pressure.
Cavener just managed to clear the long on boundary leaving six to win off
the last ball. Cavener aimed for the short long off boundary towards Paul
Coverdale. It was a slight mishit. Paul Coverdale is one of the better
fielders in
England
at present and the outcome was assured. Simon Clements

The
game against Codicote 1st team was always going to be a challenge, and
having been inserted, we collapsed to 44-5 and my worst fears were well
founded. Fortunatly Alan Richardson and Colin Simmons put on 33 for the 6th
wicket both showing a combination of dogged defence and selective hitting,
when Colin was out for a fine 23, it was left to Ben Howell and Louis
Walpole to keep Alan company. They both batted really well against some very
good bowling and they both played a couple of very good shots each, however
the main task was to occupy the crease and use up overs while Alan continued
to pick up runs. When the skipper joined Alan for the last over, Alan was on
49 and a scampered run off the first ball brought him his first ever 50. We
closed our innings on 128 -9, a good comback from 44-5.
We all suspected this was not going to be enough and we all felt we were
about 60 runs short. However no one told this to Jack Caulfield who took a
wicket in each of his first 2 overs and at 14-2 we had a glimmer of a
chance. Jack looks a better player after his extended run in the 3's. Sadly
the score was in the 120's before we took any more wickets but 2 more gave
us 4 points from the game, our worst haul of the season so far.
Codicote will go on to progress through several more divisions if they keep
this side together and sometimes you just have to say that we were beaten by
a better team.
Jack Caulfield and James Richardson both bowled with credit and James took 2
good catches. Our batting let us down this week, apart from Alan Richardson
who takes the MOM this week for his maiden 50, well done Alan.
Flamsted II away next week and lets hope for a return to winning ways, our
next 4 games are all against the 4 teams immediately above us and then the
one below us so a lot could
change.

We
were invited to bat, on paper we had a strong batting side but as we all
know, cricket is not played on paper but on grass. To say the bounce was
variable was a gross understatement and like last week our top order was
blown away by a combination of bad luck and bad batting, John Tunnell, Ian
Cheeseman and Alan Richardson, will all be disappointed with the way they
got out, whilst Mark Terry and Stuart Johnstone will both consider
themselves unlucky.
Colin
Simmons provided the only double figure score with a fine 38 including a
huge 6. Ben Howell showed great application often missing in the colts and
batted for 45 mins and kept out 45 deliveries to ensure we were not
completely blown away. When the rain came at 107-9 that was the end of the
day. Flamstead will be no doubt disappointed at the result but I'm not
convinced, given the quality of our bowling and the helpful pitch, that they
would have found it easy and I'm sure we would have been competitive.I'm
compelled to conclude that this was our worst batting display for some time
but 10 points keeps us in the top half of the table.
With
no Terry, Cheeseman, Johnstone, Howell or Simmons next week, an opportunity
for some of us to step up and be counted.

As
stand in 'skipper' I would like to highlight the efforts of all those
involved on Saturday.
North
Mymms 3rd XI (or the Craig Family XI as it was renamed, there were only 3
of us!!!) played Bushey 2's they won the toss, I called tails it came down
heads. They decided to have a bat. Cue comment from Russell
Bennett about me being a useless tosser, not a bad shout from someone 10 miles
away on the M1 at quarter past one, accident or no accident Russ) with not
one of the side surprised by his temporary absence.
They
got 229-6, well bowleds from all the bowlers, but in particular Jack
Caulfield aged 15 and Alex Kenyon aged 16. You repaid my faith in you on
Saturday both with your bowling and your fielding, well done. Except
for Edrupt but I'll take responsibility for that. 12 for 81 runs, Bushey
have asked if they can play you every week mate, especially their
groundsman as u made no impact on his pitch, but a good COME ON CHRIS!!!
tourettes shout was good amusement, and abusing the incompentent umpire is
always a good way of getting wickets!
We
gave the 5 an over target a good chase for the first 30 overs as we
maintained the required run rate, however losing both Shoaib 54 (well
batted) and Russell 'worse timekeeping than British Rail' Bennett 30 in
the space of 2 overs halted the chase, with our middle to lower order
failing to carry on their good work, we lost our way With 9 overs to
go we were 160ish for 9, with Mick Stiffin and Jack Caulfield at the
crease. I will admit my hope on them surviving was not great
especially with their 1st team player who can only play home games and
having already taken 5 wickets steaming in from one end.
However
both batted excellently, Jacks trigger movement of backing away to square
leg is different but effective, and they took us to 189-9, and 10 points
from the game and rescuing a draw, despite Jack feeling the need to
twice, rock back and pull their captain through mid wicket in
the final over, looks great when you middle it fella, but did my
heart rate no good. We got 10 points. To
end I would like to say thanks to all my team for their efforts this week
on the non-playing side. None of you cried off (made Friday night
easier), all but one turned up on time (Russell, I have no doubt Jane will
be in labour for 44 weeks, it certainly won't be early!!!), no one moaned (apart
from "2 hands" Tyler, but that goes with the job), all those who
umpired did it excellently, except for 'the skipper' (Hass on
reflection, u were plum), Pete & Micks combined sledging of the
tubby one when he got a wicket was priceless. A big thank you
to Hilary and Nathan for doing the scoring. It was one less thing to worry
about. You made it almost a pleasurable experience. I hope
your hearing has recovered from Bobby's enthusiastic appealing.
THANKS

Stevenage won the toss and
elected to bat and lost an early wicket thanks to a good catch at gully by
Adam Davies off the skipper's bowling. The number 3 came to the wicket and
within a few imperious straight drives it was obvious this was not your
standard Div 12 batter, a quick look through the score book failed to locate
any previous appearances.
Keeping faith with my philosophy
of trying to give everyone a game, we rotated the bowling at regular
intervals, using 6 in all; everyone bowled well. Jason Baldwin, still only
13, hit the top off stump to claim his only wicket, but did manage an
excellent run out with only one stump to aim at. Martin Dee and Adam
Davies both bowled with good control, but it was James Richardson who took
the eye with 3 for 20 in two spells, including the number 3 batsman who made
81. One particular delivery from James was dispatched for four by the same
player, the non batter shouted "great
shot, shit ball", you can guess my retort three balls later as James
removed his middle stump. A second wicket for the skipper and another run
out, saw the innings close at 163-8 and 8 points for us. It could have been
so much better though had we not dropped 7 catches, more practice needed for
some and I'll be working on that next week before the game.
In truth, with 4 of last weeks
top 5 all missing, we were going to struggle to get the runs, we should
still have done better than we did though and 89 all out is a pretty poor
display.
By contrast with our philosophy
of giving value for money, Stevenage used only 3 bowlers, their skipper
choosing to bowl 18 overs unchanged despite our 9, 10 and 11 having a
combined age of less than mine. Looking through the score book he does this
every week picking up 5 and 6 wickets. Given that one of their players was
run out without facing, and 2 others got ducks.......Never mind, being a
colt at Mymms is clearly much better than being one anywhere else.
Botany Bay III away next week,
sitting 4th in the table.

North
Mymms 2XI recorded their third win of the season on Saturday when by
beating Bushey by 5 wickets. After winning the toss and electing to field,
much to the disappointment of the team on the hottest day of the season so
far, North Mymms got off to a fantastic start.
Dave Searle took two wickets in his first over just failing to achieve a hat
trick. He was ably supported by James Richardson (4 - 0 - 21 - 1) who found
some extra bounce and had the No.4 batsman caught behind. Bushey were
reeling
at 2 runs for 3 wickets and it should have been 4 but for a dropped catch !
Imran Malik (17 - 6 - 30 -2) replaced Richardson and wickets fell steadily
until Bushey were all out for 93. Dave Searle bowled throughout ending with
impressive figures of 6 for 32 off 22 overs.
In reply, North Mymms made steady progress on a wicket which was providing
the bowlers with some assistance. Opener, Adam Lewis, batted throughout
ending on 34 not out and was supported by cameos from Russell Bennett (20)
and Imran Malik (13). The win takes North Mymms up to ninth in the Division
4 table.

We
took on Botany Bay III's in lovely settings on a perfect day. Having won
the toss, as always, we elected to bat and the decision looked to be a
disastrous one with both openers going early and we were 3 for 2 inside
6 overs. Colin Barson bowled without scoring and Mark was
dismissed LBW for 1. Chris Cook hung around with Stuart
Bulger for 43 deliveries before he 2 was bowled for 3. At this point
their very experienced opening Bowler had remarkable figures of 10 - 9 -
2 - 1.
The
skipper promoted himself up the order to try and steady the ship, this
allowed Stuart Bulger to start to settle in and play his shots. An
incredible statistic was when Stuart reached his 50, the team score was
58 and we had batted for 30 overs. Once Stuart was caught behind without
adding to his score, Paul Terry joined the skipper and soon went in the
same way as Stuart. We were now 67 for 5 off 37 overs. With only 10
overs to go and Ian Bright striding out to join the skipper, the future
looked far from orange. I'm sure our readers will be amazed, but no
further wickets fell and we closed our innings on 118 with the skipper
undefeated on 35 and Ian (Ultimate) Bright 20 not out, a career best. We
at least had something to bowl out but clearly Botany Bay were now in
the driving seat.
The
new ball went to Mark Terry and Matt Rathbone, making his league debut.
Mark got a wicket first over, caught behind by Henry Farrell, a good
find. Sadly we couldn't apply pressure from both ends and
Matt, then Darren Medforth and finally the Skipper, all failed to pick
up any further wickets. At the other end Mark was getting the ball to do
all sorts of things, swing, seam and bounce and the opening bat must
have played and missed at least 50 times before Mark finally bowled him
and put him out of his misery. Stuart Bulger was given the job of
supporting Mark and the two bowled well in tandem. Matt Rathbone took a
good catch off Stuart's bowling and Mark picked up a couple more at the
other end including the number 3 who had got 66. The pressure was being
applied and a couple more wickets and some tight bowling meant they
needed 6 to win from 12 balls with 4 wickets in hand. Stuart bowled the
penultimate over and was disappointed with a wide and a couple of
scampered singles. We arrived at the most unlikely situation of the
final over to be bowled by Mark with Bay needing 2 to win and 4 wickets
in hand.
A
single off the first ball was followed by a 5th Wicket for Mark, the
experienced Jeff Jarvis adjudged LBW. Sadly
the 3rd ball of the last over saw the scampered single they required and
they were very relived to pick up the 30 points to our 7. A fantastic
effort by the whole team and the team spirit was first class. Stuart
Bulger, even at 60 years of age is still a very fine player and clearly
still able to play at a much higher level, his 50 was a great effort
followed by 2 for 28. Despite that, I must give the MOM award to Mark
Terry who had left Edinburgh at 5 am that morning to play, must have
been disanointed with his dismissal, but still bowled out of his skin,
nearly winning the game for us, and returning the figures of 21.3 overs,
9 maidens, 5 wickets for 30 runs. Well done Mark. I understand it was
Wednesday before Mark could walk again. Well done
everyone. Ian Lawless
